Course: Introduction to Watercolor for Beginners

When: Tuesdays starting July 2nd | Evening class: 6:30pm - 9:00pm

Duration: 4 lessons, 2.5 hours each

What you’ll learn:

This 4-lesson beginner course is targeted for absolute beginners in watercolor painting. You will learn the basics, including essential techniques, color mixing, and hands-on exercises. By the end, you'll be able to create your own beautiful artworks. Art materials for this course will be provided.

Art Materials:

  • Watercolor paints (basic set)

  • Watercolor brushes (round and flat, various sizes)

  • Watercolor paper (140 lb cold-press)

  • Palette for mixing colors

  • Masking tape

  • Pencil and eraser

Course content:

  • Objectives:

    • Familiarize students with watercolor materials.

    • Teach basic watercolor techniques.

    Topics Covered:

    1. Overview of watercolor supplies.

    2. Preparing your workspace.

    3. Basic brush handling and strokes.

    4. Techniques: Wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, dry brush, and washes.

    Activities:

    • Demonstration of each technique.

    • Practice exercises: Create a series of swatches using different techniques.

    • Practice basic technique by creating a simple watercolor card or bookmark.

  • Objectives:

    • Understand primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.

    • Learn how to mix colors and create gradients.

    Topics Covered:

    1. Introduction to the color wheel.

    2. Mixing primary colors to create secondary and tertiary colors.

    3. Creating gradients and color transitions.

    4. Understanding warm and cool colors.

    Activities:

    • Practice mixing colors and creating a color wheel.

    • Create a gradient exercise with at least three different colors.

    • Paint a simple landscape using mixed colors and gradients learned in class.

  • Objectives:

    • Combine learned techniques to create a cohesive composition.

    • Focus on light, shadow, and depth.

    Topics Covered:

    1. Planning a composition.

    2. Layering techniques: Building up color and texture.

    3. Creating light and shadow effects.

    Activities:

    • Plan and sketch a simple composition (landscape).

    • Apply layering to add depth and detail.

  • Objectives:

    • Work on a final watercolor painting.

    • Review and critique work, discussing strengths and areas for improvement.

    Topics Covered:

    1. Final touches and details.

    2. How to evaluate your own work.

    3. Common mistakes and how to avoid them.

    4. Framing and presenting your watercolor artwork.

    Activities:

    • Complete the final project: A finished watercolor painting based on a chosen subject.

    • Group critique and feedback session.
